Pastels
The seagulls comprise my Chip Eater theme – how the “wild” becomes tame in the face of French Fries. Paddling up to me in the crystal clear waters of the Indian ocean off the west Australian coast, I am looking down on them, scrounging (successfully) for fries delivered by tourists. When did gulls get a taste for potatoes?
The Koi fish series depicts the colourful rush of introduced species towards the “harvest” delivered by humans. A single minded dedication to this dependency.
The reverse is found where some humans feel driven to hunt for the “wild” (like in the gorge and pool pastels from the Karajini National Park in the Pilbara of Western Australia). We delight in that interaction and carry forward the experience in our minds. Hopefully the mood is captured in pastels for posterity.
Another theme in this gallery is one of transcontinental relocation, with seeds from other continents relocating with human mules, when it would otherwise have been impossible. Here flowers from California are seen growing wild in southern Africa, or southern African flowers are proliferating in Australia, and not due to the endless sliding of continental plates either.
