Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life

Pablo Picasso

This site is set up as a window to view and enjoy the art that I am passionate about. Scarlett Robin Studios is the public outlet for some of the unique creations I make using different media. The studios are physically in Western Australia and here in Virginia, USA. In these, I work on bright, interesting pastels and beautifully formed and decorated ceramic pieces. Most are for sale but I take commissions as requested.

Drawings

Drawing encompasses diverse styles, from realism, capturing lifelike details, to impressionism, focusing on mood and light. Abstract drawing uses shapes and colors to express ideas, while surrealism blends reality with fantasy. Cartooning simplifies forms for humor or drama. Each style offers unique ways to convey artistic vision.

Pastels

Pastel art features vibrant, soft colors applied with sticks or pencils. Artists blend and layer pastels to create rich textures and delicate transitions. This medium allows for both detailed and expressive works, capturing light and shadow beautifully. Pastels are favored for their immediacy and versatility in artistic expression.

Pitt Fire and Naked Raku

Pit firing is an ancient technique where ceramics are fired in a pit with combustible materials, creating unique, earthy patterns. Naked raku involves applying a slip that cracks during firing, revealing intricate, smoky designs on the pot’s surface. Both methods emphasize natural, unpredictable beauty in ceramics.

Sculptures and Bells

Sculpture is a three-dimensional art form that involves shaping materials like stone, metal, or clay into freestanding objects, reliefs, or installations. Techniques include carving, casting, and assembling, allowing for both realistic and abstract expressions. This versatile medium captures form, texture, and space, offering diverse artistic possibilities.

Events – Richmond Exhibition, 2025

Jeni Sleigh is a Zambian-born artist and educator. Jeni’s work in pastels and ceramics explores the intersection of nature, human interaction, and the unexpected narratives that emerge from both. Her pastel series captures themes of adaptation and movement, from seagulls scavenging in Western Australia to transplanted flora thriving on distant continents. Through bold color and expressive composition, she seeks to evoke both curiosity and connection. In ceramics, her focus is on process-driven experimentation, particularly with raku and pit firing, where controlled unpredictability shapes each unique piece. Whether in pastel or clay, her work reflects an ongoing fascination with transformation—of landscapes, materials, and the ways in which nature and humanity continually influence one another.
